The Elrond blockchain is making a positive contribution to the planet, by offsetting 25% more CO2 than its network accounts for.
Elrond is a high-speed Proof of Stake network that is more than 6 million times more energy efficient than Bitcoin. It overcompensates for its modest carbon footprint by giving back to the planet through investments in sustainability projects, biodiversity protection, and social programs.
Verified Projects
Elrond is investing in Verified Green Projects. These standards are a testament to the strong co-benefits of the projects, including biodiversity protection and social programs for local communities.

What's Measured?
Offsetra performed a corporate carbon footprinting (CCF) to analyze Elrond’s blockchain network and operations. This analysis was performed across emissions Scopes 1-3, as defined by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.
Scope 1 Emissions
0 Tonnes (0%)
Scope 1 encompasses direct emissions from resources under the organization's control (e.g. combustion of fuels to produce energy). The Elrond organization and network does not have any Scope 1 emissions.
Scope 2 Emissions
1,116.97 Tonnes (18.9%)
Scope 2 emissions are indirect emissions associated with the purchase and consumption of energy.(1) 1,108T CO2e - Network activity (incl. estimates based on geographic location of users)(2) 8.97T CO2e - Annual consumption of roughly 28,000 kWh of Romanian grid energy
Scope 3 Emissions
4,809 Tonnes (81.1%)
Scope 3 encompasses emissions from sources which are not directly controlled by the organisation, but are still related to the organization's activities. For Elrond, this includes business travel, employee commutes, and energy consumed by the blockchain network itself.(1) 4,784.5T CO2e - Estimated energy consumption of active Staking Nodes(2) 24.5T CO2e - Business travel and employee commutes
